Morphological Summary

Monotypic genus of small columnar cacti endemic to the Galápagos Islands. Its single species, the lava cactus, colonizes recent lava flows and arid coastal zones where few plants survive, frequently being the first colonizer on bare volcanic substrates.

Distribution Endemic to the Galápagos Islands (Ecuador); found on Isabela, Fernandina, Santa Cruz and other volcanic islands.
Conservation The single species of the genus is listed as Vulnerable (IUCN) due to its extremely restricted geographic range and threats from invasive species.
